Dignity

My father is a cab driver
In Baghdad
He always carries a camera
He studied art history in Paris
That’s where he met my mom
She was a lawyer
Until a bomb exploded
Next to her car
She’s buried on a hill
Overlooking a river
In the middle of nowhere
That’s what she would have wanted
She was a very private person
My father and I drive there
Once a month
Leave flowers and prayers
At midnight
I try not to cry
My mother was tough
So am I
